Three people were killed and six others sustained critical injuries after a speeding SUV ploughed through pedestrians and vehicles across a seven-kilometre stretch in Jaipur on Monday evening, the police said.
According to officials, the driver—identified as Usman Khan (62), a resident of Rana Colony in Shastri Nagar—was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred. Khan, who owns a factory manufacturing iron beds in the Vishwakarma Industrial Area, has been detained.
The rampage began near the Santosh Mata Temple, where Khan’s SUV first struck a two-wheeler. Instead of stopping, he continued to drive recklessly through the narrow lanes under Nahargarh police station limits, running over pedestrians and ramming into vehicles, including those parked outside the police station.
“He lost control of the SUV and hit most of the victims in an area of about 500 metres near the Nahargarh police station,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Bajrang Singh Shekhawat said.
The police, aided by local residents, managed to intercept the vehicle when it became stuck in a narrow lane. Khan was detained on the spot and later subjected to a medical examination, which confirmed high levels of alcohol in his system.
Nine individuals were rushed to the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital with severe injuries. Among them were Virendra Singh (48), Mamta Kanwar (50), Monesh Soni (28), Mohammad Jalaluddin (44), Deepika Saini (17), Vijay Narayan (65), Jebunnisha (50), Anshika (24), and Awadhesh Pareek (37).
Hospital authorities confirmed that Mamta Kanwar and Awadhesh Pareek were declared dead shortly after arrival. Virendra Singh succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. The remaining victims remain in critical condition in the trauma ward of SMS Hospital.
An FIR has been registered against Usman Khan based on a complaint filed by the father of Mamta Kanwar.
The incident triggered tension in the locality. Police teams from four stations were deployed along Nahargarh Road and surrounding areas to ensure law and order.
