Himachal Pradesh Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Jairam Thakur on Wednesday criticised the Congress party for questioning the appointment of the new BJP national president, Nitin Nabin.
Thakur targeted Congress’s internal functioning and defended the BJP, saying the party follows a democratic process at every organisational level.
He said that despite being the world’s largest political party, the BJP conducts elections even for its national president. In contrast, he alleged that decisions in the Congress are taken by just three members of one family. Thakur congratulated Nitin Nabin and said the BJP would gain further strength under his leadership.
On Tuesday, Congress MP Manickam Tagore had criticised the BJP after Nitin Nabin assumed charge as party president, alleging that the BJP lacks internal democracy and functions in an authoritarian manner.
Reacting to Nabin’s appointment, Tagore claimed that all major decisions in the BJP are taken only by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He also alleged that the BJP leadership sidelines its own workers and centralises power at the top.
Tagore said there was no democracy in the BJP and questioned the role of the returning officer when there was no contest. He said Congress holds internal elections, citing the recent presidential poll between Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor, and accused the BJP of moving towards dictatorship.
Meanwhile, Nitin Nabin, who has become the 12th and youngest national president of the BJP, is set to chair his first meeting of office bearers at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the new BJP chief is expected to review the party’s strategies and programmes for the upcoming elections. Organisational strengthening and key initiatives will also be discussed.
