Convicted of 14 years in jail for raping women disciples, Baba Billu Ram aka 'Jalebi Baba', the self-styled 'God-man' dies due to a heart attack.
Gajender Pandey, Jalebi Baba's legal counsel shared that he was diabetic, and was suffering from an illness leading to a heart attack. Billu was immediately rushed to the hospital after he reported uneasiness on Tuesday night, Sub-Inspector of Police, Bhup Singh told The Indian Express.
Billu was then declared dead at the hospital.
The cremation took place on Wednesday followed by postmortem at Hisar’s Civil Hospital.
Ram, also known as Amarpuri, was a mahant at Baba Balak Nath Mandir in Tohana. He was convicted in January 2023 and was receiving medical treatment in jail. Previously, he was arrested in 2018 for sexually exploiting his disciples, earning him the nickname 'Jalebi Baba' for selling jalebis on a pushcart.
The crimes came to light when police patrolling in Tohana discovered evidence of his actions. Ram was accused of forcing his victims into physical relations under the guise of spiritual treatment. Police recovered incriminating evidence, including sedatives and video recordings.
Ram's lawyer contested the conviction, claiming a lack of direct complaints from the victims.
However, the court found him guilty based on available evidence. Despite facing allegations from multiple women, he was convicted of raping three, including a minor.
