Jammu and Kashmir will hold its inaugural session today after a gap of more than six years, with the election of the assembly speaker as the first item on the agenda.
Following the speaker's election, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will address the House.
Ahead of the session, the National Conference met with alliance partners, including Congress MLAs, in Srinagar on Sunday evening.
“This was an introductory meeting. We had a brief discussion. In the Assembly session tomorrow, the Speaker will be elected. There is the LG’s address. We will see what happens tomorrow,” Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Tariq Hamid Karra told reporters after the meeting.
Senior NC leader and MLA Abdul Rahim Rather has been proposed for the speaker’s post, while the BJP, with 28 MLAs—the second-largest party after NC in the recent assembly polls—has proposed MLA Narender Singh for the post of Deputy Speaker.
The first session is set to conclude on November 8. In addition to the LG’s address, the session will include obituary references for former legislators who passed away since the last session of the erstwhile J&K Assembly on November 5.
A discussion on the Motion of Thanks for the LG’s address is scheduled for November 6 and 7.
During the recent assembly elections, held in J&K after a decade, the NC-Congress alliance won 49 out of 90 seats.
The BJP won 29 seats, making it the second-largest party. NC leader Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on September 16.
