Jammu marathon sees participation doubled over previous years

'Run for Unity' organised by J&K Police in Jammu


 

Jammu marathon organized by J&K Police saw historic participation of people on Sunday with over 9,000 runners across age groups from eight to 80 years taking part enthusiastically in the ‘Run for Unity’. Officials described the numbers having doubled in recent years. The main aim was to spread the message of unity and stay away from drugs among the youth.


The marathon was flagged off by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), headquarters, M K Sinha and ADGP Armed Anand Jain and passed through various city routes before culminating at the starting point at Gulshan ground, a police spokesman said.“The Jammu Marathon is a significant event organised by the Jammu Police every year. The number of people who participated in this year’s marathon is almost double compared to last year,” Anand Jain said.

 

He said the participants included students from various educational institutions, members of sports bodies, police and senior citizens.
The winners in different categories were awarded cash prizes and certificates by the ADG Headquarters, the spokesman said, adding all participants were presented with T-shirts, finishing medals, and refreshments.


Sinha said Jammu and Kashmir Police has been consistently organising sports and community-oriented events in the winter capital under its civic action programme, which have received an overwhelming response, particularly from the youth.“The primary objective of these initiatives is to identify and nurture sporting talent while promoting a healthy, positive and disciplined lifestyle,” he said.
Earlier this month, in Jammu The Inter-battalion zonal sports meet was organised by the police department at Gulshan Ground in Gandhi Nagar.


Officers and soldiers of various battalions participated in this five-day competition and displayed their physical ability and team spirit. The competition included many sports like athletics, football, kabaddi, hockey, boxing, judo, wushu, wrestling, weightlifting, etc.
In Jammu and Kashmir, several police battalions and personnel from other security forces also participated. Thirty-four battalions participated in this sports meet. In which the IRP 14th Bn won the overall trophy by securing 120 medals.
