Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakeena Itoo has said that schools in the Jammu division are likely to open for regular classes in all government and private recognised institutions in the Union Territory on Monday.
The minister said the government has no plans to extend the winter vacations for a further period since it would likely cause a delay in syllabus completion and also hamper the examination schedule. During a brief media interaction on Friday, she said, “Holidays were already extended until Sunday, and schools will reopen on Monday.”
“Weather conditions in Jammu are favourable; besides, Chillai Kalan, a 40-day harsh winter period, is also coming to an end in a matter of a couple of weeks,” she cited, adding that winters are not going to come back and that everyone should expect the schools to reopen as per schedule.
Earlier, on January 14, the Jammu and Kashmir School Education Department had announced a brief extension in the ongoing school holidays until January 19, owing to intense cold and bad weather conditions.
On December 22, the Jammu and Kashmir Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) announced winter vacations for all government and private recognised schools in the summer zone areas of the Jammu division.
According to the order issued by the Directorate, students from pre-primary to Class 5th observed winter vacations from December 22, 2025, to January 10, 2026. For students of Classes 6th to 8th, the vacations started from December 26, 2025, to January 10, 2026, while students of Classes 9th to 12th also observed a winter break from December 29, 2025, to January 10, 2026.
