Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was yet again suspended on Tuesday following intense rainfall that lashed wide parts of the UT, officials said.

This comes after an ongoing weather advisory issued by the MeT Department over the possibility of heavy rains triggering flash floods and landslides for the next 48 hours.

The incessant rainfall in the Jammu division triggered numerous landslides and flash floods, wreaking havoc across several districts and affecting normal life.

More than 130 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Jammu and Kashmir in August.

Meanwhile, traffic on the 250-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was suspended after the rains triggered mudslides and shooting stones from hillocks at various places between the Samroli and Banihal sectors, the officials said.

Traffic officials said no vehicular movement was allowed on the road due to safety concerns and bad weather predictions.

“There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Reasi and moderate to heavy rainfall over Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Kishtwar in the Jammu region and Anantnag and Kulgam in south Kashmir, mainly from late night of September 2 or early morning of September 3 till late afternoon,” a spokesman from the MeT Department said.

There is a possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, or shooting stones from hillocks at many vulnerable places and a rise in water level in rivers and streams, he said, asking people to stay away from water bodies and avoid landslide-prone areas.

Much of Jammu and Kashmir, along with several north Indian states, is facing tough times due to ongoing rainfall, which has submerged many parts of the low-lying areas in Jammu, Himachal, Uttarakhand, and Punjab.
