The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, considered the lifeline of Kashmir, has been shut for vehicular movement following landslides, shooting stones, and mudslides at several locations, officials said on Tuesday morning.
As per the traffic update, the highway remains blocked and is currently unsafe for traffic movement.
The alternative Mughal Road, Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) Road, and the Sinthan Road also remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation in the higher reaches.
Meanwhile, authorities have strongly advised commuters and transporters not to travel on the mentioned routes until the roads are fully restored. Clearance operations are underway, with men and machinery deployed at critical points, officials said.
Officials have urged the public not to pay heed to rumours and to verify road status through official traffic control sources.
Meanwhile, early snowfall has blanketed most tourist resorts and higher reaches, while the plains were lashed by moderate to heavy rainfall.
The ongoing bad weather conditions have sharply decreased both day and nighttime temperatures across the Kashmir Valley.
On Monday and Tuesday morning, residents experienced early morning winter chills, which is an indication of a long winter season in Kashmir.
Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Aru Valley, Chandanwari, and Kokernag were among the places that received snowfall on Monday and Tuesday morning.
Weather conditions are likely to improve from October 8, with sunny and dry spells forecast, though Doda has witnessed intense rainfall for the last two days.
