A police jawan lost his life on Friday morning in a tragic incident of accidental firing in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district. The incident occurred at Bhairamgarh police station, a region known for Naxalite activities.
Head Constable Sannu Hapka, who had returned from leave the previous day, was preparing for Road Opening Party (ROP) duty when the mishap took place.
According to police officials, the incident happened around 9 am when Hapka was cleaning his service rifle behind the police station mess.
The sound of a gunshot alerted his colleagues, who rushed to the spot. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Hapka succumbed to a chest in
jury caused by the bullet. He was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby community health centre.
"Preliminary findings suggest the incident was an accidental discharge of the weapon," said a police officer, adding that an investigation is ongoing to confirm the details.
This unfortunate event marks the sixth case of accidental firing involving security personnel in Chhattisgarh over the past six months.
In a similar incident on August 5, a CRPF jawan was injured when his rifle accidentally discharged at his unit's camp in Dhamtari district. Earlier, on April 26, a policeman was killed and another injured in Raipur due to an accidental firearm discharge at the residence of a former Congress MLA.
Moreover, on February 10, a Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) jawan lost his life, and a passenger was injured following an accidental discharge at Raipur railway station.
