A CCTV footage of the jeweller being chased by armed assailants in Amritsar on Friday.

A local jeweller was brutally attacked and robbed in broad daylight near New Flower School. The assault, which was captured in a now-viral video, was reportedly a targeted hit following the victim's refusal to pay protection money (extortion) to local gangsters.

The victim, identified as Mukhtiar Singh, a resident of Antaryami Colony and owner of a jewellery showroom on Sultanwind Road, was heading to deliver gold to a customer on his motorcycle at around 10:30 am. According to eyewitnesses and video footage, a group of 8 to 10 assailants arrived in a black car and rammed into his bike, causing him to fall.

Once grounded, the attackers, armed with sharp-edged weapons, including swords and knives, chased and assaulted Mukhtiar. The victim's relative, Sahib Singh, stated that the family had been receiving extortion calls and threats for several days, but the situation escalated into a violent confrontation when the demands were not met.

After the brutal assault, the attackers fled the scene with over 400 grams of gold, estimated to be worth ₹60 lakh. Mukhtiar was rushed to a local hospital by family members and residents, where his condition is reported to be stable. The incident has sparked public outrage with residents questioning the effectiveness of the local police as such crimes continue to occur in busy public areas.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Vishaljit Singh confirmed that the police are examining CCTV footage to identify the culprits and have launched an investigation into the extortion module behind the attack.
