Security forces in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district carried out a major anti-Maoist operation on Saturday, during which they destroyed 16 bunkers used by Maoist insurgents and recovered four powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs), police officials confirmed.

The joint operation, conducted by personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jharkhand Police, was launched following intelligence inputs about the presence of top Maoist leaders in the region, including Misir Besra, a senior CPI(Maoist) commander with a bounty of ₹1 crore on his head. The operation focused on the Naxal-affected areas under Chotanagra and Jaraikela police stations.

Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar stated that the four IEDs were found planted along a forest path near Babudera village in the Jaraikela area.

Each device weighed around 5 kilograms and had been strategically placed by Maoist cadres to target patrolling security forces. A bomb disposal squad was called in to safely defuse the explosives, preventing any potential casualties.

In addition to the IEDs, the security forces discovered and dismantled 16 underground bunkers hidden in the dense forest terrain. According to police, each bunker was large enough to accommodate between 40 to 50 Maoist operatives, indicating the scale of insurgent activity in the area.

The operation is part of an intensified crackdown on Maoist elements in the region, with efforts aimed at disrupting their logistical bases and preventing planned attacks. The police continue to monitor the area and are on high alert for any further movement of senior Maoist leaders.
