On the concluding day of the Monsoon Session, the Jharkhand Assembly witnessed a historic moment as it unanimously passed a resolution demanding the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for the late Shibu Soren, popularly known as “Dishom Guru.”
The proposal was moved by Revenue and Land Reforms Minister Deepak Birua and was adopted by voice vote with the support of both ruling and opposition members.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi backed the resolution but urged the state government to also acknowledge the contributions of Jaipal Singh Munda and Vinod Bihari Mahto, two other prominent figures in the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. He said their names should also be recommended when the proposal is sent to the Centre.
During the discussion, legislators across party lines paid tribute to Soren’s lifelong struggle, describing him as the architect of the Jharkhand movement.

Members recalled his relentless fight for the rights of tribals, farmers and marginalised communities and emphasised how his leadership ultimately paved the way for the creation of Jharkhand in 2000. Fondly remembered as “Dishom Guru,” Shibu Soren was hailed for giving a distinct voice to the tribal identity and for shaping the state’s political consciousness.
Lawmakers noted that his political journey and social struggles were inseparable from the dignity and self-respect of Jharkhand. Following the passage of the resolution, the Assembly echoed with slogans of “Bharat Ratna Shibu Soren,” reflecting the collective sentiment of the House.
Several MLAs remarked that honouring Soren with the award would not only be a recognition of his service but would also enhance the pride of Jharkhand and the nation. The resolution will now be forwarded to the Central government for consideration. Lawmakers expressed confidence that the demand will receive a positive response from New Delhi.
