The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday ordered the Jharkhand government to conduct municipal elections within four months. The polls are pending in the State.
Hearing a contempt petition filed by former Ranchi Municipal Corporation councillor Roshni Khalkho and others, the bench of Justice Anand Sen directed the government to conduct the elections by May 2025.
Chief Secretary of the State Alka Tiwari and Urban Development Secretary Sunil Kumar were physically present during the hearing on the orders of the court.
During the hearing in the court, the government again informed it about the preparations going on for the municipal elections. The government informed the court about the updated status of the triple test going on regarding the OBC reservation.
Expressing displeasure over the working style of the government the court also expressed concern over the government’s failure to implement its order passed on January 04, 2024, in which it had asked the government to announce dates of municipal elections within three weeks.
Notably, elections are pending in 9 Municipal Corporations, 19 Nagar Panchayats and 21 Nagar Parishads in the State. The nine Municipal Corporations include Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Medininagar, Dhanbad, Giridih, Deoghar, Chas, Adityapur and Mango.
The Jharkhand government has been entangled for a long time in getting the triple test done on OBC reservations to conduct municipal elections in the state.
Although steps have been taken in this direction and reports are also being sought from the district level, due to complaints received from some districts, questions are being raised on the survey.
