The Jharkhand High Court on Friday dismissed the petition filed by former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren against his arrest. The verdict came after 66 days after the High Court reserved its order on February 28.

The bench of Acting Chief Justice Justice S Chandrashekhar and Justice Navneet Kumar had reserved its decision after completing the hearing in hybrid mode on February 28.

Senior advocate of the country Kapil Sibal and High Court advocate Piyush Chitresh argued on behalf of Hemant Soren. On the other hand, ASGI SV Raju and Amit Das argued on behalf of ED.

Soren had filed the petition in the High Court challenging his arrest and had said that his arrest was not only arbitrary, but also politically motivated. Soren had said that the case registered against him is not of money laundering.

The land which the Enforcement Directorate is talking about has never been in his name.

Recently, Soren had also filed a criminal SLP (Special Leave Petition) in the Supreme Court appealing to the court that the Jharkhand High Court, while hearing the petition filed on his behalf, had reserved its decision on February 28.

Even after almost 55 days had passed, the High Court had not given its decision.

Citing the unprecedented delay in the High Court order Soren had also sought interim bail from the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had fixed the hearing in the case on May 8 and had also said that the High Court may give its verdict during the period.

Soren was arrested on the night of 31 January in a money laundering case after he resigned from the post of Chief Minister.

In the same case, ED has also arrested several persons including Afsar Ali, Antu Tirkey, Priya Ranjan Sahay, Vipin Singh and Irshad Akhtar.
