A mob of women in Jharkhand's Ranchi district brutally beat a 60-year-old man to death on Tuesday, fueled by suspicion of witchcraft.
The victim, was allegedly assaulted with rods after entering a neighbor's house and approaching a sleeping girl.
The incident occurred at Jarga Tetartoli village under Angara police station area, around 25 km from Ranchi, on Tuesday evening after the victim, Baleshwar Oraon allegedly entered a neighbour’s house and went near a sleeping girl to use black magic on her.
Chamra Minz, officer in charge of the Angara police station, confirmed the arrest of five women aged 30-50 in connection with the crime.
As the girl started shouting, village women gathered there and began assaulting him. When his wife tried to intervene, the women also beat her, Minz said.
"The women believed that if Oraon looked at someone, that person would die. Two years ago, a villager passed away, and they blamed him for it," he said.
According to Minz, the incident unfolded in Jarga Tetartoli village, roughly 25 kilometers from Ranchi.
"Deep-rooted superstition is the driving force behind this attack," Minz explained.
