Jammu and Kashmir ruling National Conference chief spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said on Monday that the violence at the revered and sacred Hazratbal shrine was a spontaneous reaction to the violation of religious sentiments.
He demanded immediate legal action against the Waqf vice-chairperson, Darakshan Andrabi, for putting the Ashoka Emblem at the religious site. He also urged the formation of a House Committee to investigate irregularities in allotments and tenders issued by the board, as he suspects financial irregularities.
Speaking to the reporters after paying tributes to the late party founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his 43rd death anniversary, Sadiq said, “Violence is no one’s answer. We can fix it better, but because religious sentiments were broken, what people did was a spontaneous response,” he said.
He said that the misuse of the state emblem was a serious matter and that action should be taken against the responsible people, and those who attempted to please a few risked such a situation.

The onus should be on the decision-makers, rather than the people, since they must have been very well aware of the outrage over the plaque embedded on the stone. “The police also have to see that if the state emblem is misused, that is a big thing… Whoever misuses the emblem, there should be action on it,” he said.
Sadiq called for accountability and said that the first step should be to take action against the vice-chairperson. “First, there should be action against VC and the rest of the FIRs. I think it was better to talk to them, call them lovingly… Intimidate them and give them references to the police and PSA; that is wrong,” he said.
