After the Bihar debacle during recent assembly elections, where it could not get a single seat to contest the polls under the Mahagathbandhan, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has started looking beyond the state to expand its political reach, particularly in regions with a substantial tribal population.

JMM insiders said that a four-member team will shortly travel to Assam to evaluate the political landscape through interactions with grassroots workers.

JMM general secretary and chief spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya stated that the party’s senior leadership would take a final call after reviewing the findings of the Assam visit.

"A four-member delegation of the party will soon visit Assam and spend a few days there to assess organisational strength and political prospects by engaging with local workers. A detailed report will be prepared and submitted to the leadership, which will then decide the future course of action,” Bhattacharya said.

The delegation will comprise minister Chamra Linda, MP Vijay Hansda, and legislators MT Raja and Bhushan Tirkey. According to Bhattacharya, Assam is being viewed as a potential battleground because of its sizeable tribal electorate, making it strategically important for the party.

The move aligns with decisions taken at the JMM’s 13th general convention held in Ranchi in April, where the party had resolved to intensify political activities in select constituencies of Assam, Odisha and West Bengal.

Leaders had also indicated plans to mobilise migrants from Assam as part of preparations to contest elections in the state.

As part of a larger expansion blueprint, the JMM is seeking to build a national presence and is preparing to contest Assembly elections in West Bengal while consolidating its base in other regions.

The party is working systematically to move beyond its regional identity and widen its footprint in Delhi, West Bengal, Assam and Chhattisgarh.

Though no formal announcement has been made, sources suggest the party intends to open offices in multiple states. Riding on its decisive electoral success in Jharkhand, the JMM is also considering setting up an office in New Delhi as it pushes ahead with its national ambitions.
