A junior doctor from Barasat Medical College and Hospital, known for his prominent role in last year’s statewide protests following the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College, was arrested on Thursday night on charges of molesting a minor patient during treatment.
The arrest of Dinanath Kumar, a third-year MBBS student and resident of Bihar, has triggered significant unrest on the Barasat Medical College campus.
According to hospital sources, a minor girl underwent an appendix surgery at the hospital on Wednesday. After returning home, she informed her family that she had been subjected to inappropriate physical contact during the procedure. Her family subsequently filed a complaint with the local police station.
Based on the complaint, police arrested Kumar, who was staying in the boys’ hostel of the college. Additional Superintendent of Barasat Medical College, Subrata Mandal, confirmed that a case has been lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Hospital insiders highlighted that the accused doctor had been at the frontline of the junior doctors’ agitation that swept across West Bengal last year after the RG Kar tragedy. His arrest has sparked widespread discussion, given his earlier public stand demanding justice and accountability within the healthcare system.
Kumar is currently in police custody, and Barasat Police have begun a thorough investigation into the allegations. Further developments are awaited as the case progresses.
