Junior doctors from various medical colleges staged a protest at Kolkata Police headquarters, Lalbazar, on Monday, demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
Despite being stopped from marching further, the protesters remained at B B Ganguly Street, about half a kilometre from Lalbazar, throughout Monday night.
The rally, which saw participation from students and local residents, was met with a heavy police presence and a barricade of chained guardrails. The protesters placed a replica spine and red roses on the barricade to symbolise the police's duty to protect citizens.
One of the doctors told PTI, "We did not expect the Kolkata Police to erect a 9-foot-high barricade to block our path. Our protest will continue until we are allowed to meet the Commissioner of Police. We will stay here until then."
The doctors, who had begun their march around 2 p.m. on Monday, held placards demanding Goyal's resignation and burned an effigy of him.
They also chanted slogans calling for justice and protection, particularly in response to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
The medics have criticised the police for their handling of the case before it was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
