Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court following the elevation of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu to the Supreme Court of India.
The Centre issued a notification on Monday stating that the appointment was made by the President under Article 223 of the Constitution. The post had fallen vacant after Justice Nagu’s elevation, necessitating the appointment of an Acting Chief Justice.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra… to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana,” the notification said.

Justice Mishra, who was transferred from the Allahabad High Court, joined the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 21, 2025. He was earlier designated a Senior Advocate in 2013 and elevated as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014, becoming a permanent judge in 2016.
Born on November 16, 1968, he enrolled as an advocate in 1993 and practised mainly in civil, constitutional and service matters. He has represented several statutory bodies and public sector organisations during his legal career.
Among notable cases, he has been associated with judgments including the Nithari serial killings matter and has also passed significant orders in service and constitutional cases during his judicial tenure.
In the Punjab and Haryana High Court, he has handled matters related to illegal mining and other key constitutional issues.
