The Bommai family's political journey continues into its third generation, beginning with SR Bommai, a former Karnataka chief minister.
Basavaraj Bommai, the current Haveri MP, had previously ruled out his son Bharath’s candidature.
However, with former minister Murugesh Nirani reluctant to run, Basavaraj reconsidered and chose Bharath for the Shiggaon constituency.
Bharath Bommai, aged 35, holds an MBA from Singapore Management University and an engineering degree from Purdue University, USA.
He is also an entrepreneur, involved in ventures like AutoTech Engineers, Valtek Corporation, and Ashwa Energy. If he wins, he will succeed his father, who has represented Shiggaon since 2008.
The bypoll follows Basavaraj's election as Haveri MP.
Basavaraj mentioned that the selection of the Shiggaon candidate is based on their winning potential.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party’s ST Morcha president, Bangaru Hanumanthu, has been given the ticket for the Sandur bypoll.
Hanumanthu, aged 42, has been associated with the BJP since 2004. Originally from Kudligi, he holds BA and B.Ed degrees.
Hanumanthu has also tried his hand in films, acting as the lead in Mana Mechida Bangaru of 2015.
