Karnataka government has announced a 3.75 per cent hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for its government employees and pensioners. The move which is effective from 1 January 2024 is considered as an attempt to lure voters, ahead of the polls. The dues will be, reportedly, paid off along with the March salary.

The move is also compared with the BJP government’s move to hike DA by 4 percentage points to 50 per cent, eyeing parliamentary elections.

With this development, the total component of the Karnataka government employees will go up from 38.75 per cent to 42.5 per cent of their basic salary.

CM Siddaramaiah took to platform X to announce the development. A section of his posts reads: “This change represents a significant financial commitment of Rs. 1792.71 crores every year, reaffirming our dedication to our employees.”

Siddaramaiah highlighted that the move would cost the state exchequer ₹1,793 crore annually.

Additionally, the Karnataka government has also increased the DA to 50 per cent from the existing 46 per cent for staff under UGC, AICTE, ICAR, and JNPC pay scales.
