A student was killed, and several others were injured after a boy allegedly attacked fellow students with an iron bed rod inside a Gurukul residential school hostel in Ballari, Karnataka, late on Saturday night, said police.
According to the Ballari police, the incident took place late on Saturday night after dinner, when most students were asleep in the hostel. Officials said a Class-IX student suddenly went on a rampage and attacked anyone he could find inside the dormitory.
“The student suddenly attacked his fellow students and the hostel warden with an iron rod. In the incident, one boy died while several others were injured,” said a police officer, adding that the injured students were rushed to Ballari Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) Hospital for treatment.
The deceased student has been identified as Hemanth, a resident of Adavani in Kurnool district.
P. S. Harsha, Inspector General of Police for Ballari, said the exact reason behind the attack is not yet known.
“A case has been registered at the Brucepet Police Station. Both the attacker and the victim are minors. A police team, along with the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, has visited the spot, and an investigation is underway,” he said.
The victim’s father, Laxmikant, said he received a call around 11:30 pm informing him about his son’s death.
“When we came here, we found out that our son had been murdered. This incident happened due to the negligence of the school management,” he alleged, adding that he has filed a murder complaint at the police station.
Police said further investigation is in progress to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.
