Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday said the state government would take action against the (RSS) within the ambit of the law.

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday said the state government would take action against the (RSS) within the ambit of the law, indicating that a detailed study of the organisation and its history was currently underway. Kharge asserted that the government’s approach would strictly adhere to legal provisions. “Whatever we do has to be within the legal framework,” he said, adding that the administration intends to “bring them within it.”

Responding to queries on whether he had received a reply to his letter addressed to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat—which raised concerns regarding the organisation’s registration and other issues—Kharge dismissed expectations of any response. “I had told you that it would not come, hadn’t I?” he remarked, reiterating that the government would proceed with due process.

Kharge noted that around six weeks had passed since he first raised the issue and emphasised the need for a comprehensive review before any action is taken. “We need to study and understand their 100-year history,” he said, adding that even members of the organisation may not be fully aware of it.

Taking a swipe at Bhagwat, the minister also referred to his recent interaction with young people, questioning its intent. “Now, apparently, he met some Gen-Z people recently. Is it about supporting them after beating them up?” Kharge said.

He further criticised the RSS for what he described as self-assumed authority in judging patriotism. “They themselves are not registered. They certify others,” he said. “Can I decide whether someone is a patriot or a traitor? Who are they to decide that?”

When asked about the next steps if there is no response to the letter, Kharge confirmed that the government would move ahead as planned but declined to disclose specific details. “If I discuss everything here, what surprise or legal element will remain?” he added.

The remarks signal a potential escalation in scrutiny of the RSS by the Karnataka government, though officials have maintained that any action will be firmly grounded in legal procedures.
