The Karnataka government has unveiled a comprehensive master plan for the integrated development of the Kukke Subrahmanya temple, the state’s highest revenue-generating temple, managed by the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department.

The redevelopment, estimated at ₹254 crore, aims to improve infrastructure and facilities for devotees.

Minister for Muzrai and Transport Ramalinga Reddy recently discussed the master plan with department officials. He stated that the temple, being the highest revenue earner and most visited in the state, requires significant development.

A supervisory committee has been formed to oversee the project’s implementation, with the Muzrai Department Commissioner serving as its chairperson.

Key aspects of the redevelopment include redesigning the temple’s outer tower to align with local culture and traditional architecture. Construction will begin once all approvals are secured.

A site in the temple’s tulasi garden has been designated for the ashlesha bali and puja mandira. Donors will be allowed to fund this project, or the temple will fund it if no donors come forward.

The temple’s annadana (free meal) facility is also set for expansion, with plans for a larger hall if necessary. The Ratha Beedi (Chariot Street) will be developed to reflect the temple’s cultural heritage, with enhanced seating arrangements for devotees.

Kukke Subrahmanya temple, located in Sullia, Dakshina Kannada, draws numerous devotees from Karnataka and beyond, particularly for rituals like sarpa samskara and ashlesha bali. The temple also hosts visits from celebrities, politicians, and cricketers.

To accommodate the growing number of visitors, the master plan includes the construction of a commercial complex along the road leading to the temple, offering shops and other amenities for pilgrims. Parking facilities will be expanded, and necessary land acquisition will be undertaken to accommodate more vehicles.

In response to the needs of budget-conscious devotees, a 50-room dormitory will be built to offer affordable accommodation. Additionally, a modern queuing system will be implemented to streamline darshan procedures, with upgrades to the queue complex to improve the waiting experience for devotees.

The redevelopment initiative aims to enhance the overall experience for devotees while preserving the temple’s rich heritage. With increasing footfall, the proposed infrastructure will ensure a more organised and comfortable pilgrimage experience.

The Kukke Subrahmanya temple, in the 2023-24 fiscal year, recorded a revenue of ₹146 crore, an 18 per cent increase from the ₹123 crore earned in the previous year.
