The Kangra district administration in Himachal Pradesh has imposed a total ban on all trekking activities above 3,000 metres, officials said on Tuesday.
Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said the decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of tourists. The District Disaster Management Authority has issued orders enforcing the total ban on trekking above 3000 meters.
The administration has also issued special instructions for popular trekking routes. Prior permission from the Superintendent of Police, Kangra, has been made mandatory for trekking on the Kareri, Triund and Adi Himani Chamunda routes.
Officials said that if any warning or alert is issued by the Meteorological Department in Shimla, all permissions already granted for these trekking routes will automatically stand cancelled.
Agencies involved in disaster management, including the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, the Mountaineering Centre in McLeodganj, and police search and rescue teams, have been exempted from these restrictions.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the District Tourism Officer to inform all stakeholders associated with tourism in Kangra district and ensure that tourists staying with them are made aware of the trekking restrictions.
Last week, police safely rescued four trekkers from Delhi who had lost their way while trekking towards Triund near the Dhauladhar range in Dharamshala.
