The health department in Kangra has launched a nutritional support initiative aimed at assisting families of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients.
In a gesture marked by empathy and community involvement, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rajesh Guleri introduced the program, noting that it represents a compassionate and pioneering approach within the district. As part of this effort, Nikshay Mitra Darpan Sood from Baijnath stepped forward to donate Nikshay Poshan Kits, benefiting 38 family members of 13 MDR-TB patients.
Dr. Guleri explained that this initiative was carried out with the informed consent of the patients and emphasized the importance of nutrition in TB prevention, likening it to a vaccine. He cited findings from the RATION trial, which showed a marked reduction in TB cases among families who received additional nutritional support.
Acknowledging the generosity of the Nikshay Mitras, Dr. Guleri encouraged more citizens to participate, describing the program as an exemplary model with the potential to inspire similar efforts across the state and country.
District Health Officer and District TB Control Program Officer Dr. Rajesh Sood added that the nutrition kits have been sent out via the respective Block Medical Officers, who will ensure that the supplies are delivered directly to the beneficiaries.
