Thousands of devotees took part in the annual Kanwar Yatra in Haridwar on Thursday as the holy month of Shravan began. Pilgrims collected sacred water from the Ganga and started their journey to offer it at Shiva temples.

Carrying Ganga water in decorated kanwars, devotees participated in the traditional pilgrimage linked to the worship of Lord Shiva during the auspicious month.

Yoga guru Ramdev said Shravan is one of the most sacred periods in the Hindu calendar and is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. He appealed to pilgrims to preserve the spiritual spirit of the yatra.

Calling Shravan a special month for devotees of Mahadev, Ramdev said it is a time for prayer, devotion and spiritual discipline. He also urged Kanwar Yatris to stay away from intoxicants and avoid any disruptive behaviour during the pilgrimage. Such actions, he said, go against the values associated with Lord Shiva and Sanatan Dharma.

Ramdev encouraged devotees to focus on devotion and conduct themselves in a peaceful and respectful manner throughout the yatra.

From early morning, large numbers of devotees visited the Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple in Kankhal. They performed Jalabhishek and offered prayers to Lord Shiva to mark the beginning of the holy month.
