The Haryana government has decided to give protected monument status to the official residence of the Karnal Deputy Commissioner and two other heritage sites in the district, officials said on Thursday.
Deputy Director of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Dr. Banani Bhattacharyya, said the other two sites were located in Indri in Karnal district. These include Shishmahal and a mound believed to date back to the medieval period.
Once the formal notification is issued, the three sites will come under the Haryana Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964. This Act ensures the preservation and maintenance of ancient and historical monuments and archaeological sites and remains.
Dr Bhattacharyya added that the Karnal DC’s residence is a British-era building. Even after being declared a protected monument, the Deputy Commissioner will continue to live there as usual.
Notably, in the pre-Independence era, William Fraser was Karnal's first Deputy Commissioner (1819). Before Independence, 49 DCs had served Karnal.
