At least 14 persons were killed, and about 19 others sustained injuries in two separate road accidents across Karnataka on Wednesday, according to police sources.
In the first incident, a truck carrying fruit vendors plunged into a 50-metre-deep valley along the Savanur - Hubballi Road, resulting in the deaths of ten individuals and injuries to nine others.
The victims were transporting fruits to a local fair in Yellapura. The truck driver attempted to allow an overtaking vehicle to pass and swerved to the left around 5:30 a.m., Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police M Narayana maintained.
“As the road lacks barrier walls, the truck fell into a 50-metre-deep valley, resulting in ten fatalities. The injured have been admitted to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi,” the officer said.
In a separate accident, four persons, including three students, were killed, and ten others were injured when their vehicle overturned near Araginamara Camp in Sindhanur, Raichur district.
The students were from Mantralaya Sanskrit Pathashala and were on a pilgrimage to Hampi to offer prayers at Narahari Temple.
Deceased students have been identified as Aryavandan (18), Sucheendra (22), and Abhilash (20), with the driver, Shiva (24), also succumbing to injuries. The 10 injured individuals have been admitted to a local hospital.
Sindhanur Traffic Police Station has registered a case.
