The state government of Karnataka is creating an elaborate plan in collaboration with various digital platforms to counter any misinformation, fake news, and hate speech, says IT-BT and Home Minister Priyank Kharge. Minister Priyank Kharge stressed on the fact that all these online challenges have an immediate and negative effect on public administration and law and order.
This campaign comes after consultations among government officials, IAMAI, and top executives of social media and digital platforms. In the course of the meeting, both parties emphasised the need for close collaboration in order to make the digital space more responsible. The main emphasis was made on mechanisms that would allow to quickly identify and act on online content that might be harmful, spread misinformation, and incite discord among communities.
To back this up, the government will make provision for having special contact points between different social media sites and the Information Disorder Tackling Unit that is going to be put in place by the state. Special rapid response communication lines will also be set up.
The new department, which will be managed by the IT-BT and Home Departments in collaboration, hopes to ensure smooth interaction between the government and technology companies, speedy action against misinformation, and an enhanced reaction of the government towards hate speech and misinformation. Speaking on this topic, Minister Kharge reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Karnataka towards creating a secure, transparent, and accountable digital environment.
