Dried-up lake beds are a testament to the intense heatwave that has gripped J&K this summer

Mercury has continued to rise in Jammu and Kashmir this summer, refusing to let people feel any respite as the minimum temperature touched 25.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Lakes seem forlorn and their banks drier than usual as the temperature refused to slide below the 20 degree-mark.

Qazigund was recorded at 23.4 degrees Celsius this July, its previous high recorded only in 1997 at 22.8 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar feels scorching at 24.5 degrees Celsius – unusually hot for the world-famous tourist spot. Its highest minimum temperature was recorded on July 21, 1988, at 25.2 degrees Celsius. The second time the capital city was hot again was in 2024, when the temperatures soared to 24.8 degrees Celsius on July 29. Its third highest was in the same year on July 28, when the temperature went up till 24.6 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam, another popular tourist spot in south Kashmir, had recorded 20 degrees Celsius this July – its second-highest temperature in the month of July – after going up till 20.2 degrees Celsius on July 30, 2013. It’s third-highest was at 19.7 degrees Celsius on July 26, 2021.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, has touched its second-highest temperature this July at 21.8 degrees Celsius. The last time it was so hot was in 2005 and 2006, when it recorded 22.6 degrees Celsius and 21.7 degrees Celsius, respectively, also in July.
