Hurriyat Chairman and prominent cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, speaking at a media gathering in Srinagar on Monday, reiterated that the Kashmir issue is "fundamentally a political problem" and that it "requires a constructive, meaningful dialogue for resolution".
"I have frequently stated from the Jamia Mosque that this issue can only find a solution through genuine and productive dialogue," he emphasised.
He urged that a peaceful, dialogue-based approach be adopted to address both civic and political dimensions of the "Kashmir issue."
Mirwaiz explained that the issue is twofold: on one hand are everyday civic concerns like roads, electricity, clean water access, and employment, which are essential for progress.
On the other hand are the political aspects, which call for a fair and peaceful settlement through open discussions.
In response to media questions, he noted, "We are steadily progressing in our efforts to find an ultimate solution to the Kashmir issue," and expressed confidence that the Hurriyat platform could facilitate a peaceful resolution.
He added, "We remain committed to a constructive approach to peace."
Reflecting on a recent meeting with his party colleagues, the Hurriyat leader revealed it was their first gathering in over five years, since the central government’s revocation of Article 370 and 35A on August 5, 2019.
Although he declined to disclose specifics, he described the meeting as informal but successful.
The meeting also highlighted concerns regarding Hurriyat party members detained under various laws.
Mirwaiz stated, "Many of our colleagues remain in jail, and we hope the government takes steps for their release."
Mirwaiz posted a video of the reunion on social media platform X, featuring senior Hurriyat leaders Abdul Gani Bhat and Bilal Lone.
