The 10th Muharram (Ashura) was celebrated with religious fervor and cultural ethos throughout Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to pay respects to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), the Grandson of the Islamic Prophet, who was martyred along with his family in the battle of Karbala.
The day is celebrated in honor of Hussain and his 72 companions, including kith and kin, martyred at Karbala in 680 CE, to uphold the truth. Alam and Zuljanah processions were taken out in all districts across Kashmir.
Srinagar witnessed the largest procession, which began at Botkadal and proceeded through various localities before concluding at the Imambargah in Zadibal's interiors in the evening. Besides local mourners, some high-profile dignitaries, including LG Manoj Sinha, National Conference Chief Dr Farooq Abdullah, and high-ranking police officials, also attended the procession and distributed water and juices to the mourners in Srinagar.
