Following the reports of the killing of the Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, protests erupted in several parts of Kashmir on Sunday.
Hundreds of protestors took to the streets at various places in areas with a large Shia population, the officials said. The protestors marched through the streets peacefully, shouting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.
Iranian supreme leader Khamenei was killed in an attack by Israel and the United States, as confirmed by an Iranian state media outlet early Sunday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video statement on Saturday, had said, "Israel and the United States have launched a joint operation to remove the existential threat to Israel posed by the Ayatollahs' regime in Iran.”
“I told you: the operation will continue as long as necessary, and patience is also required. I thank my friend, President Donald Trump, for his leadership. I spoke with him again this morning and commend the close cooperation between us. We will not allow a murderous terrorist regime to arm itself with nuclear weapons. We will continue to strike the targets of the terrorist regime and remove the threat. I also appeal to the citizens of Iran: do not miss this opportunity. Unite for your future and your freedom. Citizens of Israel, continue to follow the instructions of the Home Front Command. Together, we will stand firm..."
40-day mourning declared —
Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, a prominent Shiite religious body in Jammu and Kashmir, has announced 40 days of official mourning across the region following the assassination of Khamenei. President of Anjuman-e-SharieShian Aga Syed Hassan Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi announced an official statement.
In a statement on Sunday, the organisation described the late Khamenei as the “patron of the oppressed” and said he attained martyrdom.
He said Iran will continue to fight and remain steadfast against the oppressors—Israel and the United States—and called on Muslim nations to unite on righteous causes and the Palestine issue.
The Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian stated that his “struggle against global arrogance” would remain a guiding light. The organisation concluded its statement with prayers for the departed soul.
Meanwhile, the situation remains tense across the Kashmir Valley as authorities stay on high alert with additional security forces deployed in most Shia-dominated areas due to anger over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
District Budgam, which has a sizeable Shia population, observed a shutdown in protest against the killing of Khamenei and his associates by Israeli and US military operations.
