Jammu and Kashmir is preparing for possible rain and snowfall from December 30 onwards, according to the MeT forecast.
Parts of the Kashmir Valley received the season’s first snowfall on December 20–21, and further predictions of more snowfall issued earlier this week.
On December 21, the higher reaches in Kashmir, including the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, were among several places in the upper reaches that had received successive snowfall over consecutive days, officials said.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “There is a possibility of further snowfall at scattered to widespread places across the Kashmir Valley from December 30.”
“There are fair chances of light rain or snow at many places and moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of north and central Kashmir on December 31 and January 1,” the officials added.
The minimum temperature in the summer capital, Srinagar, continued to drop below the freezing point on Saturday night due to cloudy weather conditions.
Other parts of the valley have also experienced similar conditions, with cold wave conditions intensifying across most of the weather stations.
Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are bustling with tourists and local visitors ahead of New Year’s celebrations despite the cold. The Meteorological Department has forecast generally cloudy weather, with dry conditions expected to return after January 2.
The recent rain and snowfall ended a month-long dry period in Kashmir, which had also been reflected in several water bodies, showing an increase in water levels following the snowfall recorded on December 20–21.
