Srinagar continues to shiver as cold wave conditions intensify across the Kashmir valley. The minimum temperature further dropped on Tuesday, with Srinagar recording minus 7.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, said the MET office in Srinagar.

It has also predicted the minimum temperature to hover around minus 8-10 for two to three days with the possibility of rain and snowfall on the higher reaches till 30th December.

The fall in mercury led to the freezing of water supply lines as a thin layer of ice covered the surface of several water bodies, including the Dal Lake.

Gulmarg, a famous tourist and ski resort, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius the previous night.

Similarly, Pahalgam, another famous tourist resort, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, slightly down from the previous night’s minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, it said.

Meanwhile, the MET office has said that an active Western disturbance is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon.

With the western disturbances building up, there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall over the higher reaches towards late Friday afternoon, the MET Office said.

While the weather is supposed to stay dry on December 29, 30, and 31, light snowfall is possible at isolated places in Kashmir from January 1.

Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan'—considered the harshest phase of the winter, which commenced on December 21.

The annual weather phenomenon lasts for 40 days, and during these harsh winter days, everything in Kashmir Valley comes to a standstill. The 40 days are followed by a 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold).
