A young Kashmiri boy selling shawls with his family in Uttarakhand’s Vikas Nagar area was brutally assaulted by some individuals on Tuesday evening, which left him with a fractured arm and serious head injuries.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) stated that accused persons first stopped the 18-year-old Kashmiri boy and asked him about his identity. The situation turned violent after the accused learnt that the family was Kashmiri Muslim.
“The boy was beaten mercilessly. He was hit with iron rods and punched repeatedly. Other family members were also dragged, slapped, and attacked,” the association said in a statement.
The injured teenager was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Doon Hospital in Dehradun as his condition worsened. His relatives said blood was oozing from his head after the attack, and several bruises were visible on his body. His left arm was also fractured.
Family members said the teenager was helping his family earn a living by selling shawls. They said the attack became more violent after the assailants learnt about that he was Kashmiri Muslim.
The JKSA termed the attack a disturbing case of communal profiling and mob violence against a vulnerable family struggling to survive through seasonal work. The association stated that such attacks are spreading fear among Kashmiri Muslims who travel to different parts of the country in search of work.
Seeking swift action, the association urged Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to step in and ensure the registration of an FIR.
