Police in Madhya Pradesh on Friday arrested former tehsildar Amita Singh Tomar from her residence in Gwalior in connection with an alleged ₹2 crore flood relief fund embezzlement case in Sheopur district.
Amita, who had earlier gained public attention after appearing on the popular television show Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by Amitabh Bachchan in 2019 and winning ₹50 lakh, had been absconding following the registration of a case against her.
According to police, the alleged irregularities date back to the aftermath of the 2021 floods in Sheopur district, when losses suffered by 794 residents of Baroda tehsil were assessed and relief funds were subsequently released by the government. However, an audit later revealed discrepancies amounting to around ₹2 crore.
Investigations found that the funds were diverted to 127 bank accounts unrelated to the intended beneficiaries. The probe implicated 110 individuals, including 25 patwaris and Amita, who was serving as the tehsildar of Baroda at the time.
An FIR was subsequently registered against the accused. Police said that Amita had approached both the High Court and the Supreme Court seeking bail, but her pleas were rejected. A special leave petition filed by her was also dismissed, following which she remained untraceable for a period.
Acting on specific information about her whereabouts, a police team reached her residence in Gwalior and took her into custody.
Sheopur Superintendent of Police Sudhir Agarwal confirmed the development, stating that Amita had been arrested in connection with the alleged scam and further investigation is underway.
