Congress leader KC Venugopal joined the nationwide "Vote Chori, Gaddi Chhod" (Vote Theft, Quit Power) signature campaign on Sunday in Alappuzha, Kerala. The party aims to collect five crore signatures across the country as part of the movement.
In a post on X, the senior politician claimed that "large-scale Vote Chori and manipulation of electoral rolls" have fundamentally shaken public faith in the republic. He asserted that "vote theft" is not an isolated crime, but part of a wider, systemic assault on the Constitution, which simultaneously weakens the economy, promotes social injustice, and threatens India’s integrity.
"As part of our nationwide 'Vote Chori, Gaddi Chhod' signature campaign & door-to-door campaign, I joined the movement today in my ward, Kaithavana, in Alappuzha," Venugopal wrote.
He described the campaign as "people's movement" and called upon every citizen who believes in democracy to join the "struggle to defend our Constitution and save the soul of India."
This mobilisation follows related statements from party leader Jairam Ramesh, who a day earlier targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his earlier potshots at opposition parties. Ramesh repeated the Congress’ "vote chori" allegations against the BJP and asserted that the countdown for the ousting of the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government had begun.
Ramesh also highlighted the Prime Minister’s alleged hypocrisy, noting that Modi "continuously criticised" the Karnataka government for providing ₹2,000 per month to 1.3 crore women under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, yet has now started distributing similar "revdis" (a term often used for freebies) to the people of Bihar ahead of assembly polls.
