Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has stepped in to promise justice for the family of Ramnarayan, a 31-year-old labourer from Chhattisgarh who was killed in a mob lynching at Walayar.
Describing the incident as "deeply disturbing," Vijayan emphasised that such violence has no place in a progressive state like Kerala and risks damaging its social reputation. The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by the Palakkad district police chief, is currently handling the probe to ensure no detail is overlooked.
This official assurance follows intense pressure from the victim’s family and the political opposition. Ramnarayan’s brother had previously stated that the family would refuse to accept the body until their demands — including ₹25 lakh in compensation and charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act — were addressed.
Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan also wrote to the CM, urging immediate financial aid for the grieving family.
The tragedy unfolded last Wednesday when Ramnarayan was accused of theft at Kizhakeattappallam and beaten by a group of people. Although he was rushed to the Palakkad District Government Hospital, he eventually succumbed to his injuries. So far, police have arrested five individuals in connection with the assault.
Beyond the legal proceedings, the state government has committed to reviewing the case for a formal compensation package, with the CM calling for collective public vigilance to ensure such a horror never repeats itself.
