A private dental surgeon in Kerala has been directed to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for damaging five healthy teeth of a patient during treatment.

The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission issued the order, mandating Dr. Shiny Antony Rouf, who operates a dental clinic, to pay the compensation to K.R. Usha Kumari, a resident of Vattukulam.

According to the complaint, Usha Kumari sought treatment from Dr. Rouf to address concerns about her upper tooth.

However, without her consent, the dentist performed a dental procedure on five unaffected teeth and accepted an advance payment for crowning.

Subsequently, Usha Kumari experienced pain and difficulty in speaking, leading her to seek further treatment at Kottayam Dental College. She incurred an additional expense of Rs 57,600 for crown fixation at another hospital.

The Commission determined that the dentist's negligence resulted in the destruction of the patient's healthy teeth, causing mental distress and financial loss.

In light of this, the panel ordered Dr. Rouf to compensate Usha Kumari with Rs 5 lakh for the damages incurred during the treatment.
