A 38-year-old man in Kerala’s Malappuram district has been confirmed to have contracted monkeypox (Mpox), the state Health Department announced on Wednesday.
The patient, who recently arrived from the UAE, had been hospitalised with symptoms of Mpox, as revealed by Health Minister Veena George in a Facebook post.
George advised anyone arriving from abroad with symptoms to seek medical attention promptly. The man, who had isolated himself upon recognising symptoms, is receiving care at Manjeri Medical College.
The man’s test results, confirmed positive on Wednesday, follow his precautionary isolation.
Mpox, generally self-limiting, lasts between two and four weeks, and patients often recover with supportive care.
The infection is transmitted through close contact with an infected person and usually presents with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation and urge vigilance among those with recent travel history.
