In a major relief for commuters across Punjab, the ongoing strike by PRTC and Punjab Roadways employees has been called off. The decision follows successful talks between employee unions and the state government.
For the last several days, transport workers had been on strike, causing a lot of inconvenience to daily commuters, especially women who rely heavily on government bus services for free travel.
The PRTC-PUNBUS Contract Workers Union announced on Tuesday that it is withdrawing the strike after the government accepted its major demands.
Union leaders said the Punjab government has accepted the demand to release the arrested bus employees. The government has also agreed to withdraw the cases registered against the workers during the protest.
The striking employees had been demanding regularisation of contract workers, the discontinuation of the kilometre scheme and the release of detained staff members.
With the strike now officially over, all government buses will resume normal operations. much-needed relief to commuters across the state. The union is expected to discuss its future strategy in the coming days.
