Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge approves formation of committees for Jharkhand Congress ahead of assembly polls

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the formation of three key committees for the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC), including the Pradesh Election Committee, Campaign Committee, and Manifesto Committee, according to an official statement released on Friday.

The statement confirmed the appointment of JPCC's former President Rajesh Thakur, along with party leaders Amba Prasad and Dhiraj Prasad Sahu, as members of the Election Committee. The formation of the committees is set to take effect immediately.

The announcement comes ahead of the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections, with the Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) continuing their alliance. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren recently met with Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss election strategies.

Following the meeting, Soren described it as a "courtesy meeting" and confirmed that discussions on the Assembly elections would begin soon.

“We will run the government with full strength and, in the future, win the elections too,” Soren told reporters, expressing confidence in the alliance's performance in the forthcoming polls.

The state’s Legislative Assembly election, expected later this year, will elect representatives to the 81-member Assembly as the current government’s term ends in 2024. The Election Commission of India has not yet announced the election dates.

In the 2020 Assembly election, the JMM won 30 seats, while the Congress secured 16 seats. In the most recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 8 seats, while the JMM and Congress won 3 and 2 seats, respectively.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a fierce attack on the JMM government, led by Hemant Soren, accusing it of “injustice” towards the people of Jharkhand.

Speaking at the BJP’s ‘Parivartan Sabha’ in Giridih, Shah urged voters to oust the current government and bring the BJP to power, promising significant changes for the poor, Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs in the state.
