Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi landed in Guwahati on Wednesday morning for a packed day of meetings, consultations, and outreach initiatives, marking their first joint visit to Assam since Gaurav Gogoi was appointed state unit chief.
The high-level visit is being seen as a bid to energise the party’s state cadre and consolidate political momentum ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Both leaders were received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by senior Assam Congress leaders. Adorned with traditional gamosas, they were greeted with cultural performances, including a Bodo dance, which Gandhi paused to acknowledge.
Their first engagement was at a hotel near the airport, where Kharge and Gandhi held a closed-door session with the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s political affairs committee. This was followed by meetings with party MPs, MLAs and state-level office-bearers.
“They will also be meeting members of the tribal community and people facing persecution, threat of displacement and other forms of harassment,” said a Congress spokesperson.
Later in the day, both leaders headed to Chaygaon, about 40 kilometres from Guwahati, where they addressed Congress mandal and block presidents. The event, viewed as a grassroots-level push, comes amidst rising political activity in the state.
