The Telangana High Court on Thursday adjourned the anticipatory bail plea of Congress leader Pawan Khera, with the court expected to deliver its verdict on Friday.

The hearing was deferred after the Advocate General of Assam sought to present arguments in the case, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Legal Cell advocate Ponnam Ashok Goud said.

Speaking to reporters, Goud said the allegations against Pawan Khera pertain to the alleged non-filing or suppression of information in election nomination papers, which he said are yet to be proven.

“When the Advocate General of Assam appeared, he wished to argue the matter. The case was therefore adjourned… The allegations made against him concern only the non-filing of information, suppressed in his election nomination papers. These allegations must be proved,” Goud said.

He further alleged that the state acted in haste, claiming that within 24 hours, a police team was sent to Delhi. “He anticipated possible arrest and even physical mistreatment. Under Article 14, we have every right to defend ourselves. That is why he approached the court and filed the petition,” he added.

On the issue of jurisdiction, Goud said the respondent argued that the petition should have been filed in Delhi or Assam, rather than Telangana. “The arguments of the respondent side… were that the jurisdiction is not there, we might have filed the petition in Delhi or Assam,” he said, adding that the final verdict is expected around 11 am on Friday.

The case has unfolded alongside a political exchange between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Pawan Khera.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised Khera, calling him a “bhagora” (absconder), amid allegations made by the Congress leader.

The developments follow claims by the Congress regarding the alleged possession of multiple passports by Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, and subsequent police action, including searches at Khera’s residence in Delhi.

In a video shared on social media, Pawan Khera criticised the police action and demanded answers, asserting that he would not be intimidated.

The matter stems from an FIR lodged by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma earlier this week, intensifying the legal and political confrontation.
