Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, visited Assam on April 19, 2025, to inspect crucial infrastructure projects at Jogighopa, underscoring the growing bilateral cooperation between India and Bhutan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed in a press release.
During the visit, His Majesty toured the Inland Waterways Terminal (IWT) and the Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), both key initiatives aimed at bolstering trade and regional development. Assam's Minister for Public Health Engineering and Housing & Urban Affairs, Jayanta Malla Baruah, welcomed the King.
The visit highlighted the significance of the Jogighopa IWT, which was inaugurated in February this year, as a critical component of India’s infrastructure development in the Northeast.
Officials emphasised that the terminal will enhance cross-border logistics and connectivity, benefiting both India and Bhutan.
These projects align with India's broader regional integration goals and are expected to boost economic ties between Assam and Bhutan. The visit reflects India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy, which seeks to strengthen economic and people-to-people connections with its neighbours.
In this context, the visit of the Bhutanese King underlines India's commitment to sustainable infrastructure development that benefits not only the domestic economy but also regional partners. India and Bhutan share a long-standing relationship based on mutual trust and cooperation, reflected in the King's visit and high-level engagements between the two nations.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit underscores the shared vision of connectivity and economic growth between India and Bhutan, furthering collaboration on strategic infrastructure projects to enhance ties in the years to come.
