After Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s push to boost border tourism, the Kinnaur district administration has released detailed guidelines for tourists who are planning to visit areas near the India-China border.

During a meeting held at Reckong Peo, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Dr Amit Kumar Sharma, it was decided that tourist movement to destinations near the Indo-China border would be permitted only till 2 pm. Tourists should carry a valid ID card or Aadhaar card, for entry into these sensitive zones.

Dr Sharma stressed the need for discipline, stating that photography of military equipment or installations will be strictly prohibited in the interest of national security. “Visitors are expected to follow all standard procedures to ensure smooth and continued access to these sensitive regions,” he said.

The administration has asked the departments concerned to ensure safe and smooth travel to key spots like Shipkila, Rani-Kanda, and Khana Dumti. Instructions include maintaining motorable roads, ensuring power and mobile connectivity, putting up clear signage, and strictly monitoring sensitive regions.

The Deputy Commissioner also appealed for support from local panchayats, the Indian Army, and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to help ensure visitor safety and maintain order.

“These steps are crucial for encouraging tourism while respecting the strategic importance of our border areas,” he said. “If all stakeholders cooperate, we can offer a safe, enriching, and scenic experience to travelers while upholding national interest.”

With its beautiful landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Kinnaur is seen as a promising hub for border tourism as long as security protocols and visitor discipline are strictly followed.
