The ongoing counter-terror operation in Kishtwar’s dense forests has entered its second week, presenting significant challenges to security forces. Thick forest cover, natural caves, and adverse weather — including nearly two feet of fresh snowfall on January 27 — have complicated search efforts in the region.
Security forces first engaged the group of terrorists on January 18 near the Chatroo forest belt.
According to police and security officials, the group is believed to be linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and comprises three active, well-trained terrorists who have evaded capture for the past 13 days, demonstrating strong mountain warfare skills.
The operation has been expanded across multiple areas, including neighbouring districts.
A second firefight broke out on January 22 when troops tracked and engaged two to three terrorists at Mali Dana Top in the Singhpora forest area. The third encounter occurred late on Sunday night in the Janseer-Kandiwar forest zone.
On Saturday, a fresh gunfight erupted in the Dolgam area after security forces re-established contact with the terrorists for the fourth time since the operation began. Reports indicate that at least three terrorists are currently trapped at the site as the exchange of fire continues.
During the initial clash on January 18, one Army Special Forces trooper was killed in action, while seven others were injured and evacuated to the base hospital in Udhampur.
Mobile internet services remain suspended in several areas — including Singhpora and Chatroo — to prevent misuse by anti-national elements amid the multi-agency search operation in snowbound terrain.
